Solar energy is broken down in three main components: UV, Visible light, and Infrared heat. The construction of the window film dictates how well it will filter out the undesired parts of natural sunlight.
The first part of the film to filter the sunlight is found in the adhesive. It is not uncommon to find a UV absorbing component here and sometimes in other layers. A base of polyester film is then dyed or coated with metal. Dyes are commonly used to darken most films and adjust the level of visible light transmission. In terms of heat rejection, the most economical method utilizes a basic metal coating. This is what we call conventional window film.
Advanced films use high efficiency components such as precious metals or ceramics. The better products in the market are dye free, which eliminates the possibility of fading and color change. Using thermally stable and inert materials increases the longevity of the film's performance. Not all films are created equal. Performance, longevity, clarity, and warranty coverage are not the same between each manufacturer.
